Adaptive clothing with rear-closure designs, special needs features, and easier dressing solutions can make a big difference for seniors, elderly individuals, and people with mobility challenges. These articles explore practical ways to improve comfort and independence, whether through men’s and women’s rear-closure garments or clothing that helps caregivers assist with dressing. From innovative adaptations to everyday solutions, each piece is designed with simplicity, function, and dignity in mind.
Rear Closure Clothes
Rear closure designs are garments that open down the back rather than buttoning down the front. Buck and Buck specializes in rear closure, adaptive clothing for men and for women.
For men, if the man's normal process of putting on a shirt or pulling a shirt over the head is painful or just not possible, our rear closure shirts are a great solution. The shirt opens completely down the back with strategically placed snaps that allow the shirt to be put on from the front. We can do the snap-back (rear closure) alteration on any shirt we carry.
For women, if the normal process of putting on a dress or blouse is painful or just not possible, our open back dresses and blouses are the answer. Our rear closure garments open completely down the back to make assisted dressing easy and snaps are strategically placed to avoid pressure points on the spine.
What types of rear closure clothes does Buck and Buck carry? Buck and Buck carries many styles of rear closure clothes for women. Some of the most popular of our rear closure clothes are the snap back dresses and dusters for women with disabilities. Other popular items in our rear closure clothing collection are our sweatsuit designs and knit pants sets. We also carry undergarments and sleepwear that are terrific complements to our other rear closure clothes. An important thing to remember is that most of the clothing in our catalog can be converted to rear closure clothes.
Buck and Buck also carries many rear closure clothes for men. Our shirts range from dress shirts to our very popular casual styles for all occasions. We have sweaters and outerwear in our rear closure collection as well. Our rear closure designs usually have snaps, but we will replace the snaps with hook and loop closures if that is better for you. Our snaps are strategically placed to avoid pressure points on the spine for those who spend much of their time sitting or reclined in bed. We also have some styles that have as few as two or three snaps positioned at waist and shoulder level to make dressing and provision of personal care as easy as possible.
Just let us know what your needs are and we'll assist you with your purchases!
Special Needs Clothing
What types of special needs clothing does Buck and Buck carry? Buck and Buck designs and makes available a variety of special needs clothing for older adults. We particularly are aware of the needs of the elderly who have difficulty dressing due to medical conditions, a variety of disabilities and simply the normal process of aging.
All of our garments are easy to wear and easy to care for. Our garments either pull on, can be pulled up, use VELCRO® brand closures, large buttons or snaps or easy pull zippers to encourage self dressing. Our special needs clothing are designed to keep the individual independent in the task of dressing for as long as possible and also features styles that make the assistive task of dressing easy for the caregiver.
Our popular special needs clothing designs for women and for men are the open back, side zip, and garments with VELCRO® brand closures that are made to look like everyday, ordinary clothing, but that are easy to wear and care for.
Most of our everyday garments can be adapted to special needs clothing, just ask us. In addition to the special needs styles that you will see in our catalog, we also will design clothing to meet your own unique special needs. Please share your dressing issues with us and we’ll work to develop a solution.
Clothing Solutions
There are common difficulties in dressing that older women and men struggle with that we have clothing solutions for. Some of these challenges result from arthritic fingers, vision deficits, limitations in mobility, and a myriad of foot problems. These clothing solutions are featured in our adaptive clothing line for men and women, such as zippers versus buttons, hook and loop closures on garments and footwear, wide, stretchy, elastic waistbands, large buttons, open back clothing for those confined to a wheelchair or bed, cut-away garments for the non-ambulatory person, arm and leg protectors for those with very fragile skin, and much more.
We have listened to many customers with all kinds of dressing difficulties and have put most of those clothing solutions into our catalog to benefit others. However, some dressing problems that we have helped to solve are not yet included in the catalog. For example, seniors and elderly customers who have feeding tubes or drainage devices that are accessed through the abdomen have had openings strategically placed in folds or pleats of their garments to make dressing and care easier as well as discreet.
Sometimes men who are confined to a wheelchair need a longer fly opening that will allow the use of a urinal without causing an embarrassing spill. Those who have had leg or arm amputations often prefer the pant leg or sleeve modified so there is not so much material to handle when accessing the limb. We will shorten the pant leg or sleeve and also provide hook and loop closures or breakaway snaps in the garment to care for the limb or prosthesis.
There may also be problems in dressing related to surgical procedures, fractures, or temporary limitations that require adaptive clothing. Just because you don’t see a design of ours that will provide a clothing solution for you, let us know what the problem is and we’ll work with you to come up with something that works.
