Mastectomy Designs

Having a mastectomy poses many fears and challenges for the woman undergoing the treatment and for her family. The woman is anxious about the surgery, and there is much teaching and counseling that the nurses and doctors need to with her. Usually the type of clothing to select to wear home from the hospital is most often neglected, but would be very helpful. Going home from the hospital with a Jackson Pratt (JP) drain in the wound site of the lumpectomy or mastectomy can be a dressing problem for a woman that few people recognize. Yes, the drainage tubing comes with a clip that was designed to attach to the woman’s clothing, but the clip usually does not provide any measure of confidence in assuring her that the drain will not pull out. (The drain is secured in place by the surgeon, so it should not come out.) Access to the drainage bulb for emptying the fluid that the bulb collects is also difficult if the woman has the JP bulb clipped underneath her clothing. She will need to have access to the Jackson Pratt drainage bulb several times a day until the drain is removed so why not make this procedure a bit easier for her.

Buck and Buck has designed two items of mastectomy wear, both a blouse and a duster, that can be worn home from the hospital immediately post-mastectomy. The blouse and the duster will accommodate the drain(s) and allow the woman to perform the procedure of emptying the drainage bulb(s) with greater ease and confidence, and no one even has to know that the drain is there but her!

Take a look at our blouse and our duster and make a choice to help your loved one care for herself through a trying time.
We also have a support vest made of soft, cotton knit that may be ideal for her once the drains have been removed. The vest provides some support and security without having her need to work with hook and eye closures. If she does prefer a bra, our front closure design may be just the bra she needs.
