What is Adaptive Clothing?
Adaptive clothing is a design that changes everyday clothing into styles that are easily worn by individuals with physical handicaps, diminished motor skills or with dementias.
Buck and Buck has designed a variety of adaptive clothing options for you to choose from based upon our own observations and from our discussions with customers like you. Our adaptive clothing designs promote independence in dressing and personal care for the wearer for as long as possible and also provide ease in the dressing process for the caregiver.
How do we make adaptive clothing?
We use Velcro® closures on our adaptive apparel whenever appropriate. Use of Velcro® often makes dressing easier for the elderly and for many adults with disabilities.
We use 22 inch long zippers down both sides of our adaptive pants. Other companies use shorter zippers, but we find that the longer zipper is easier for the wearer of the adaptive apparel and easier for the caregiver when assisting in the dressing process or in providing personal care.
We place snaps in our open back apparel at strategic locations to avoid pressure points on the spine and to provide the best coverage possible for the wearer.
We utilize folds and pleats in our adaptive apparel to hide connections for feeding tubes, catheters and other medical devices.
We change buttons to zippers in our adaptive clothing if that is easier for the wearer, which is often the case for our seniors.
Loops, tabs and pulls on zippers are added to our adaptive clothing for those seniors who may have arthritis or other disabilities causing a diminished ability to use the fingers.
Our open back, cut away apparel is designed exclusively for the senior confined to a wheelchair or recliner. The fabric provides generous leg coverage & looks like everyday clothing from the front, but when the senior who cannot walk needs personal care, the cut away seat allows ease in toileting which greatly assists the caregiver.
Our open back jumpsuits are designed to look like everyday clothing, but prevent the senior with Alzheimer’s or other dementias from undressing inappropriately. This adaptive apparel has a long zipper down the back which prevents the senior from undressing.
